JOE MAPHIS WITH TOMMY DUNCAN, "MAKES NO DIFFERENCE NOW"

Here's a Joe Maphis solo behind Tommy Duncan, western swing's greatest singer. It's from the Ranch Party tv show in the 50's. Tex Ritter does the introduction.

It's nice to hear Maphis in this mid-tempo bouncy setting, rather than the lickety-split tempo he's known for.

Man, There is nothing I don't like in this video! I can sort-of sing like Tommy, but I sure can't pick like Joe Maphis! His album with Merle Travis was phenomenal... as were the solo recording and those with his wife, and I've found some videos of him with Larry Collins... holy cow! If you ever have the time to transcribe any of his stuff... I'll be saving my pennies. Thanks also for the Grady Martin stuff (I agree, one of the all time best) and the nod to George Barnes is very apt. Have you ever checked out Hoyt "Slim" Bryant? He and Clayton McMichen played on Jimmie Rodger's last session and jazzed it up quite a bit. I put them and Emmett Miller in the forgotten fathers of western swing category, but Slim Bryant was also a hero of Les Paul ... I may be imagining it, but I think I hear a few Slim Bryant licks in Arthur Smith's plying.....

Short answer--slim Bryant, mcmichen,
Emmett miller-- all great. And I had those joe and Merle albums as a teen-- big influence on me.

Thanks - will do... probably in 2015. I'm going back to school next year and am trying to get some theory and music reading ability down first, to make up for having no formal traiing thus far. After 20 yrs of picking, I've finally become determined to work through all 7 Mel Bay Modern Guitar books beginning Jan 1 of 2014. Between now and then, I'm working on the first George Van Eps Book... hoping to lay the foundations that will eventually allow me to digest his big 3.
